Diana Krall
Diana Krall at her best!
“This Dream Of You” is an album that I have produced from sessions that took place in 2016 and 2017, but it is very far from a record of outtakes or unfinished music. Although those sessions also produced the album,
“Turn Up The Quiet”, that was another picture in a different frame.
When my producer Tommy Lipuma died shortly after that release, I lost not only a great friend but my creative partner. Earlier this year, I realize that I still had work to do in preparing the large repertoire covered in those 2017 sessions for this new album. I’m glad to say that record leads off with
“But Beautiful”, a performance that Tommy loved with all his heart and the last song we were able to complete together.
From there on, the album features a quartet with John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and Anthony Wilson on “Almost Like Being In Love and “That’s All” and a
trio with Christian McBride and Russell Malone who play on
“Autumn In New York” and “There Is No You”.
I’ve turned the pages between those ensembles with duo performances with John Clayton on “I Wish On The Moon” and Alan Broadbent, who plays piano on “More Than You Know” and “Don’t Smoke In Bed”. The final session at Capitol Studios features an ensemble including fiddle of Stuart Duncan, heard tearing through “Just You, Just Me”, guitarist Marc Ribot and a rhythm section of Tony Garnier and Karriem Riggins. This line-up plays on my
re-imagining of Irving Berlin’s “How Deep Is The Ocean and the Bob Dylan song “This Dream Of You”, which includes accordion played by my uncle, Randall Krall.
I am immensely fortunate to be working once more with Al Schmitt, an engineer and mixer without equal. I asked Al if we could achieve a very different balance, placing the voice a little closer to the listener.
Some of these performances have unavoidable poignance. In days when one cannot easily travel to New York, in “Autumn” or any other season, I have to believe that there is still a place for hope even in a city of struggle
and change.
These songs, like most others that I have recorded, summon up pictures in my mind. It is to that movie that I hope to take the listener.
If “But Beautiful” is the Overture, then “Singing In The Rain” is the End Title.
