Wenn eine Künstlerin wie Melody Gardot ihr erstes Best-Of-Album veröffentlicht, darf man Besonderes erwarten: die 24 Tracks des Doppelalbums hat sie selbst aus über zwei Jahrzehnten ihrer Decca-Aufnahmen kuratiert, neben großen Erfolgen wie „Baby I’m A Fool“, „Morning Sun“ und „C’est Magnifique“ werden auch seltene Live-Aufnahmen sowie zwei bislang unveröffentlichte Titel beleuchtet. Das alles macht „The Essential“ zum Porträt einer einzigartigen Sängerin und Songwriterin und ihrer sinnlichen Lieder zwischen Jazz und Pop.

Der erste der beiden bislang unveröffentlichten Titel, die Ballade “First Song”, ist eine Zusammenarbeit von Gardot mit dem legendären Bassisten Charlie Haden, der den Song gemeinsam mit Sängerin Abbey Lincoln schrieb. Das melancholische Intro auf dem gestrichenen Bass und der akustische Bass werden natürlich vom inzwischen leider verstorbenen Haden selbst gespielt.

Der stimmungsvolle mexikanische Folksong „La Llorena”, begleitet nur von Gitarre und Cello, wurde 2019 bei einem Melody-Gardot-Auftritt in Mallorca mitgeschnitten.
