Tobias Wiklund – Inner Flight Music

Nachdem er jahrelang in Dänemark gelebt und mit Dänen zusammengearbeitet hat, könnte man Tobias Wiklund mehr als nur ein bisschen dänisch nennen. Dennoch ist er immer ein Schwede geblieben, der seinen nordskandinavischen Wurzeln aus Natur und Erziehung treu geblieben ist und vor kurzem in sein Heimatland Schweden zurückgekehrt ist. Und obwohl Wiklund ein gefeierter Trompeter ist, zieht er es vor, seine eigene Musik auf dem Kornett zu erkunden. Als Künstler zeichnet er sich als fabelhafter Instrumentalist und innovativer Komponist aus. Der vielseitig begabte Schwede hat im Laufe der Jahre an Musikprojekten vieler Genres mitgewirkt, und seine eigene Musik ist stets konzentriert, großzügig und fesselnd.

Von dem Moment an, als Tobias Wiklund seine erste Louis-Armstrong-Platte hörte, wusste er intuitiv, dass Musik eine andere Art von Vehikel ist, das Türen zu etwas Großem und Magischem öffnet. Damals war er noch ein kleiner Junge, aber die Sprache der Musik sprach zu ihm. Wenn er über diesen lebensverändernden Moment spricht, strahlt er wie ein Kind am Weihnachtsabend: „Als ich diese Musik hörte und später begann, sie selbst zu spielen, hatte ich das Gefühl, ein Teil davon zu werden, nicht mehr getrennt zu sein, sondern mit etwas Größerem verbunden zu sein“, sagt Wiklund.

Tobias‘ neues Album, INNER FLIGHT MUSIC, feiert diese Verbindung. Die zehn Originalsongs erforschen die menschliche Beziehung zum Universum durch konkrete Kompositionen und abstraktere Formen der Improvisation. Wiklund nutzt die Musik als Brücke zwischen dem Irdischen und dem Göttlichen und erforscht die Fähigkeit des Mediums, tiefen Gefühlen und Sehnsüchten eine Form zu geben und uns daran zu erinnern, dass wir Teil von etwas Größerem sind – vielleicht sogar von etwas Heiligem.

Tobias Wiklund (b.1986) has always stood out among his generation of brass players who gravitated towards the cornet over the trumpet when given the opportunity. The cornet has a softer and darker sound than its more blaring and tart cousin. Like others of his ilk, Wiklund enjoys revisiting the instrument’s history – often rediscovering forgotten or overlooked examples of “good old jazz.” This unique approach allows him to contribute to contemporary creativity while exploring the genre’s roots and celebrating hidden facets. While many consider the history of jazz to be a series of rebellions against tradition, Wiklund proves that it doesn’t always have to be this way. He manages to acknowledge the history of jazz while exploring new musical avenues.

Tobias released his self-titled debut album, WHERE THE SPIRITS EAT, in 2018 with the skystormer’s personal and honest approach to jazz, taking the listener on a journey that celebrates the roots of jazz and breaks with its conventions. On SILVER NEEDLE (2021), he showcased his ability to combine tradition and innovation again. The album received wide acclaim for its intimate, lyrical style and sophisticated compositions. Its title is, among other things, a metaphor for something sharp, precise, delicate, and fleeting. With these releases, Wiklund established himself as one of the most original and exciting Nordic jazz musicians. He continues to evolve as an artist, composer, and improviser, creating music that appeals to listeners while seeking beauty with a breadth of language and understanding.

INNER FLIGHT MUSIC is an ambitious project consisting of ten original works ranging from intimate duos to collaborations with the prestigious Swedish wind orchestra Blåsarsymfonikerna, which has over 100 years of tradition in wind and percussion music. Wiklund has expanded his repertoire as a composer in the larger format. Several talented musicians from different genres also contribute to the album, and Wiklund’s straightforward compositional approach brings it together into a strong, coherent musical statement of identity.

With INNER FLIGHT MUSIC, Wiklund demonstrates not only his skill as an instrumentalist but also as a composer as he explores the role of music as a bridge between the human and the divine. With his ability to combine tradition and innovation, both written and improvised, he has created a unique musical universe with room for both the emotional and the reflective, for interaction and dialog, with music that speaks to both heart and intellect.
